APASAM – Moçambique

Associação de Prevenção de Afogamentos e Salvamentos Aquáticos de Moçambique (APASAM)

The Associação de Prevenção de Afogamentos e Salvamentos Aquáticos de Moçambique (APASAM) is Mozambique ‘s national organisation dedicated to drowning prevention, water safety, and aquatic rescue.

APASAM works to reduce drowning across Mozambique through a coordinated approach that combines education, training, rescue capability, and community engagement. Operating in a country with extensive coastlines, rivers, lakes, and flood-prone regions, APASAM focuses on building local capacity and promoting water safety as a public health priority.

The organisation delivers and supports lifesaving and survival swimming programmes, lifeguard development, flood and disaster response preparedness, and community-based water safety initiatives. APASAM places strong emphasis on early swimming education, particularly for children and youth in high-risk coastal and inland communities.

APASAM is supported by a multidisciplinary team of trained volunteers and professionals with backgrounds in lifesaving, swimming instruction, rescue operations, disaster response, and community development. The organisation works closely with government departments, local authorities, emergency services, and civil society partners to strengthen national water safety systems and improve coordinated response efforts.

As an Emerging Organisation of the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth, APASAM aligns its work with internationally recognised lifesaving standards and best practice, contributing to regional and global efforts to prevent drowning and save lives.
